Synthesis of Speech Sounds from a Multi-mass Model of the Lungs, Vocal Tract, and Glottis

چکیده

Like some existing vocal-tract models, this synthesizer views the vocal apparatus as a sequence of straight tubes. The walls of all these tubes, however, are modelled as coupled mass-spring systems, which in most models is privileged to the vocal cords. This, together with the ability to continuously vary the lengths of the tubes, leads to a principled treatment of the problems of source-filter interaction, which makes our model especially suitable for the generation of speech signals that include consonants. The model is restricted to the last step in articulatory synthesis: from a list of time target pairs for every articulator and a table with speaker characteristics, find the resulting acoustic signal. Among the examples that we show are various brands of voicing contrasts and their articulatory correlates.

Avicenna's Anatomical Legacy as Seen Through the Relevant Topics in Modern Anat-omy

Background: Makhaarej Al-Horouf, the study of speech sounds by Avicenna is a valuable piece of work in the study of speech sounds, which was written about ten centuries ago. It contains six chapters on sound, anatomy of vocal tract, and phonetics. It is amazing to find that Avicenna’s explanations are congruent with the findings of modern scholarship in relevant topics. The study was intended t...

Physics-based synthesis of disordered voices

The purpose of this work is the development of a synthesizer of disordered voices, i.e., a generator of sounds that mimic the vocal quality of speakers that suffer from a voice disorder or laryngeal pathology. A physics-based modeling strategy is followed for physiological fidelity and a direct relation between the physiology and the perception of vocal quality. The synthesizer is based on a sm...

Speaker identification from the sound of the human breath

This paper examines the speaker identification potential of breath sounds in continuous speech. Speech is largely produced during exhalation. In order to replenish air in the lungs, speakers must periodically inhale. When inhalation occurs in the midst of continuous speech, it is generally through the mouth. Intra-speech breathing behavior has been the subject of much study, including the patte...

A Simulation Study on the Effect of Glottal Boundary Conditions on Vocal Tract Formants

In the source-filter theory, the complete closure of the glottis is assumed as a glottal boundary condition. However, such assumption of glottal closure in the source-filter theory is not strictly satisfied in actual utterance. Therefore, it is considered that acoustic features of the glottis and the subglottal region may affect vocal tract formants. In this study, we investigated how differenc...

Analysis and Recognition of Vowels in SHAI`YG MIRI Language using Formants

Speech is generated by the co-ordination of various anatomical articulations known collectively as the vocal organs. The waveforms thus produced are either voiced or unvoiced speech. All the vowel sounds are voiced and have the sound source, the glottis. An amplification caused by the vocal tract filter is called resonance, and in speech these resonance are known as formants. Since each vowel h...
